The journey at a glance

What makes this route special

Begin beside the Atlantic in Casablanca, follow the route north through Rabat and Chefchaouen, then continue to Fes, the Sahara and Marrakech. This ten-day, nine-night journey connects changing landscapes with dedicated city time and a full day near the Merzouga dunes.

The proposed overnight plan is one night in Casablanca, one in Chefchaouen, two in Fes, two near Merzouga, one in Dades and two in Marrakech. Two nights in the desert area allow a complete local day instead of a sunset arrival followed by immediate departure.

This is an active country-crossing journey. The daily descriptions explain where the road days fall and where you can linger. Accommodation, licensed city guides, meal arrangements, tickets and airport transfers are named in your quote, and arrival/departure plans are adapted to your flights.

Read our ten-day Morocco planning guide and booking checklist before confirming. For a shorter Marrakech–Fes journey, consider the seven-day cities and Sahara route.

For destination background and visit arrangements, use the official Rabat guide, official Fes guide and Hassan II Mosque Foundation.

  • Atlantic arrival and Marrakech finish
  • Chefchaouen and Fes city time
  • Two nights in the Merzouga area
  • Southern valleys, Ait Ben Haddou and the High Atlas
  • A full local day in the Merzouga area

Your itinerary

This is a suggested route. Timing and stops are agreed in your personal itinerary and may change with conditions.

  1. 01

Arrive in Casablanca — Atlantic air & a gentle beginning

Meet at your agreed airport or city arrival point and transfer to the accommodation selected in your quote. Leave time to refresh after your journey before deciding how much to explore. With an early arrival, an agreed Hassan II Mosque visit can introduce the city’s monumental architecture beside the Atlantic; entry follows the foundation’s current visitor schedule, ticket conditions and dress rules. If a visit does not fit, a short coast walk or a quiet café is a comfortable alternative. Late arrivals focus on check-in and rest rather than a rushed sightseeing promise. Tomorrow takes you north, so keep the first evening simple and agree the morning meeting point.

    Overnight: Casablanca.
Pace: a light arrival day; sightseeing depends on flight timing.

  2. 02

Casablanca → Rabat → Chefchaouen — coast to the Rif

After breakfast, travel towards Rabat for a selective introduction to the capital. Choose a manageable combination such as the Hassan Tower area and a walk in the Kasbah des Oudayas, where lanes open towards the river and coast. Access and any interior visits depend on current conditions; this stop is not a full Rabat tour. Allow a lunch break before the longer drive north towards Chefchaouen. The route gradually leaves the Atlantic corridor for the Rif foothills. Arrive at your selected accommodation and, if daylight and energy allow, take a short first walk through the blue medina. Keep the evening relaxed after a substantial road day.

    Overnight: Chefchaouen.
Pace: one of the longer transfer days, with a selective Rabat stop.

  3. 03

Chefchaouen → Fes — blue lanes, then a new city

Begin with a morning walk while you still have time in Chefchaouen. Explore blue-painted lanes, small squares and craft shops at a comfortable pace; the medina has steps and slopes, so discuss access needs before booking. Take a café break and ask before photographing people or residential doorways. A viewpoint walk is optional and should fit your mobility, the weather and the departure plan. Continue towards Fes rather than squeezing in several distant detours. On arrival, settle into your selected accommodation and agree tomorrow’s medina meeting point. If the riad is beyond vehicle access, the quote should explain the drop-off and luggage arrangements.

    Overnight: Fes.
Pace: a walking morning followed by an intercity drive.

  4. 04

Fes — a day inside the living medina

Explore Fes el-Bali with a licensed local guide if included in your quote. Begin around a suitable medina meeting point and move into lanes where workshops, markets and historic buildings sit close together. Selected madrasa or museum visits can add context when open and ticketed as agreed. A tannery viewpoint may be considered if you wish; viewing access can involve a shop, so explain your shopping preferences beforehand. Religious sites have their own entry restrictions and are not promised as interior visits. Break for lunch, take a quieter walk or return to your riad to rest. Fes is a living neighbourhood: ask before photographing people and keep doorways clear.

    Overnight: Fes.
Pace: a walking-focused city day, adjusted to your pace.

  5. 05

Fes → Middle Atlas → Ziz valley → Merzouga — towards the dunes

Start early from your agreed Fes meeting point. The road passes through the Middle Atlas and Midelt area, with rest stops selected around comfort and conditions. A short Ifrane-area visit is possible when it fits the journey; do not expect a full forest excursion on this transfer day. Farther south, the Ziz valley introduces palm groves and the landscape opens towards Merzouga. Your sunset transfer is planned around daylight and the actual arrival. Confirm camp access and whether you prefer a camel or vehicle option before paying. Settle into the agreed accommodation for your first desert evening, with meals and bathroom arrangements specified in the quote.

Overnight: Merzouga, in the agreed lodge or camp.
Pace: a long transfer day, with comfort breaks and a desert arrival.

  6. 06

Merzouga — a full Sahara day & a second desert evening

Wake near the dunes without needing to leave for the next city. The whole day stays in the Merzouga region, giving you time for a slow breakfast, changing desert light and a quieter afternoon. If you want to explore, agree a local vehicle excursion before booking: possibilities include Khamlia, dune-edge scenery or Rissani when the market schedule fits. Local visits depend on availability and the wishes of the people hosting them; a private family encounter is not promised. During warmer hours, choose shade and rest rather than an exposed walk. Finish with another evening near Erg Chebbi. A camp or dune-edge lodge can be selected for this second night.

Overnight: the agreed Merzouga camp or lodge; the two-night arrangement is confirmed in your quote.
Pace: a local desert day; optional visits and substantial time to relax.

  7. 07

Merzouga → oasis landscapes → Todra Gorge → Dades valley

Enjoy an early look at the dunes if you wish, then travel west towards Tinghir. A Rissani stop can be discussed if the day’s timing and market schedule work; it should not make the rest of the route rushed. At Todra Gorge, stretch your legs beneath the high rock walls on a walk suited to your comfort. Continue into the Dades area, where valley roads, cultivated land and earthen villages replace the open desert landscape. Reach your accommodation with time for a quiet evening. Any additional valley viewpoint or walk depends on daylight, weather and access rather than a fixed promise.

    Overnight: Dades valley.
Pace: a travelling day with selected oasis and gorge stops.

  8. 08

Dades valley → Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou → Marrakech

Head west through the southern valleys towards Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou. Allow time for an agreed ksar visit, walking through its earthen lanes at your own pace and taking breaks in the shade. A local guide, monument fees and any other entrance tickets are included only when itemised in your quote. Continue over the High Atlas via Tizi n’Tichka, with suitable comfort stops on the winding road. The landscapes become busier as you descend towards Marrakech. Finish at your agreed hotel or nearby medina meeting point. Keep the evening flexible; this is a full journey rather than a short airport-transfer day.

    Overnight: Marrakech.
Pace: a full road day, a ksar walk and mountain-pass sections.

  9. 09

Marrakech — medina, courtyards & time to explore

Begin with a relaxed breakfast before an agreed walking visit with a licensed local guide if included. Build the route around your interests: medina lanes, craft quarters and selected historic monuments rather than trying to enter every attraction. A palace or garden visit requires the relevant ticket arrangements and availability. Pause for lunch and leave a little room for a courtyard café or independent wandering. Later, Jemaa el-Fnaa and nearby streets offer a changing city atmosphere, with the timing adapted to your comfort. Discuss walking distance, access needs and shopping preferences in advance so the day feels personal rather than a fixed commercial circuit.

    Overnight: Marrakech.
Pace: a city day with guided walking if agreed, breaks and free time.

  10. 10

Depart Marrakech — or leave room for another chapter

Enjoy a final breakfast and a quiet morning when your flight time allows. Your agreed departure transfer takes priority over extra sightseeing, with pickup arranged to allow for the airport, traffic and check-in. This itinerary finishes in Marrakech: a Casablanca departure needs a separately agreed return transfer and enough time, and an additional overnight may be the more comfortable choice. If you would like to continue to Essaouira or stay longer in Marrakech, plan that extension before confirmation so accommodation and transport can be checked. Today closes the proposed ten-day route, with any extra nights and services quoted separately.

Overnight: none included; an extension can be arranged.
    Pace: a flexible departure day.

Good to know

Your questions, answered

Can the tour end in Casablanca?

Yes, discuss a separate return transfer and the time needed around your flight. An extra night may be more comfortable than a same-day cross-country connection.

Can we include Essaouira?

An extension is the better fit. Adding Essaouira within the same ten days means shortening time elsewhere; share your priorities so the route remains realistic.

Is this suitable for families?

Discuss children’s ages, tolerance for road travel, room arrangements and walking requirements. The itinerary can be adjusted, but long distances remain a feature of a broad Morocco circuit.
