Morocco desert tours: how to choose your Sahara journey

Merzouga or Agafay? Three days or four? A practical guide to choosing a Morocco desert tour, with route choices and questions to ask before booking.

A desert night can be the highlight of a Morocco trip, but the route matters as much as the camp. Before choosing a tour, decide whether your priority is a short escape from Marrakech, the large dunes near Merzouga, or a journey that connects Marrakech with Fes. Those choices lead to very different itineraries.

First, choose the landscape you actually want

Merzouga is the gateway to Erg Chebbi’s dunes in eastern Morocco. The Moroccan National Tourist Office’s Merzouga guide is a useful introduction to the region. Reaching it from Marrakech means crossing mountain and valley landscapes over a substantial distance.

Agafay is a rocky landscape near Marrakech. It offers broad horizons and an evening outside the city, but it is a different experience from the Sahara dunes. Choose it for convenience and atmosphere, rather than as a substitute for a Merzouga journey.

Choose three days for a compact itinerary, four for breathing room

A three-day Marrakech–Merzouga round trip is a road-intensive itinerary. The return can take much of the final day, and there is only one overnight in the desert area. It works when time is limited and you are comfortable with the transport involved.

With four days, you can split the return overnight or spend another day near the dunes, depending on the route. Ask where the extra night goes: a fourth day is valuable only when the itinerary uses it in a way that suits you.

Your priority A route to consider Main trade-off
A short Sahara trip 3-day Merzouga round trip A very long final drive
Less compressed return 4-day Merzouga round trip Another overnight and travel day
Continue to Fes Marrakech–Fes via Merzouga Long transfer days at both ends

Connect the desert with the rest of your trip

If you are already travelling between Marrakech and Fes, a one-way desert crossing can avoid repeating the same route. Check the pickup and drop-off points before arranging hotels. Allow a buffer after the last drive; weather, comfort stops and road conditions can change arrival times.

If you fly into Casablanca, consider a longer circuit rather than adding separate return trips. Give city visits their own days so a broad itinerary does not become a series of rushed arrivals.

Ask specific questions about the camp

Labels such as “luxury” mean little without detail. Request the camp or lodge name, location, sleeping arrangement, private or shared bathroom, hot-water availability, heating or cooling arrangements and the meals included. Ask how luggage is handled and how you reach the accommodation.

Discuss whether you prefer a camel ride or a vehicle transfer. Neither should be assumed. Share mobility needs and children’s ages early, so the route and camp access can be assessed before confirming.

Make the quote easy to understand

  • Confirm whether transport is private or shared and which vehicle is proposed.
  • Ask which local guide services and monument tickets are included.
  • Check breakfasts, dinners, lunches and drinks separately.
  • Agree pickup locations, accommodation names and room types.
  • Read the operator’s payment, cancellation and change terms before paying.

A low headline price is not a full comparison when services differ. A clear written quote lets you decide whether a route offers the experience you want.

Explore the next steps

See the 3-day Merzouga route or compare the 4-day round trip. For a one-way journey, read our Marrakech to Fes comparison. Then use the desert packing checklist to prepare.

When a complete desert day matters

Our four-day Marrakech–Fes crossing keeps day 3 near Merzouga; the four-day Fes–Marrakech crossing keeps day 2 there. Each includes two desert-area nights. The four-day Marrakech round trip instead divides the return drive and does not include a complete desert day. For city time too, compare the seven-day Marrakech–Fes itinerary.
