The journey at a glance
What makes this route special
This four-day Fes to Marrakech route gives the Sahara its own day. Instead of arriving at the dunes and leaving the next morning, stay two nights in the Merzouga area with a complete local day in between.
Begin with the Middle Atlas and Ziz valley, then continue through Todra Gorge, Dades, Ait Ben Haddou and the High Atlas. The first and last transfer days remain substantial; the extra day creates desert time rather than shortening Morocco’s distances.
Choose a relaxed day near Erg Chebbi or request a vehicle excursion with selected local stops. Neither a 4×4 activity nor a specific cultural visit is automatically included: confirm it, the camp/lodge arrangement and the transfer option in your quote.
Compare the three-day Fes crossing or the same four-day idea from Marrakech.
- Two nights in the Merzouga area
- A complete desert day without an intercity transfer
- One-way Fes–Marrakech route
- Todra, Dades, Ait Ben Haddou and both Atlas regions
- A full local day in the Merzouga area

Your itinerary
This is a suggested route. Timing and stops are agreed in your personal itinerary and may change with conditions.
- 01
Fes → Ifrane area → Middle Atlas → Ziz valley → Merzouga
Start early from your agreed Fes meeting point. The road passes through the Middle Atlas and Midelt area, with rest stops selected around comfort and conditions. A short Ifrane-area visit is possible when it fits the journey; do not expect a full forest excursion on this transfer day. Farther south, the Ziz valley introduces palm groves and the landscape opens towards Merzouga. Your sunset transfer is planned around daylight and the actual arrival. Confirm camp access and whether you prefer a camel or vehicle option before paying. Settle into the agreed accommodation for your first desert evening, with meals and bathroom arrangements specified in the quote.
Overnight: the selected camp near Erg Chebbi.
Pace: a long transfer day, with comfort breaks and a desert arrival. - 02
A complete day around Merzouga — no intercity transfer
Wake near the dunes without needing to leave for the next city. The whole day stays in the Merzouga region, giving you time for a slow breakfast, changing desert light and a quieter afternoon. If you want to explore, agree a local vehicle excursion before booking: possibilities include Khamlia, dune-edge scenery or Rissani when the market schedule fits. Local visits depend on availability and the wishes of the people hosting them; a private family encounter is not promised. During warmer hours, choose shade and rest rather than an exposed walk. Finish with another evening near Erg Chebbi. A camp or dune-edge lodge can be selected for this second night.
Overnight: Merzouga, in the agreed lodge or camp.
Pace: a local desert day; optional visits and substantial time to relax. - 03
Merzouga → oasis landscapes → Todra Gorge → Dades valley
Enjoy an early look at the dunes if you wish, then travel west towards Tinghir. A Rissani stop can be discussed if the day’s timing and market schedule work; it should not make the rest of the route rushed. At Todra Gorge, stretch your legs beneath the high rock walls on a walk suited to your comfort. Continue into the Dades area, where valley roads, cultivated land and earthen villages replace the open desert landscape. Reach your accommodation with time for a quiet evening. Any additional valley viewpoint or walk depends on daylight, weather and access rather than a fixed promise.
Overnight: Dades valley.
Pace: a travelling day with selected oasis and gorge stops. - 04
Dades valley → Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou → Marrakech
Head west through the southern valleys towards Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou. Allow time for an agreed ksar visit, walking through its earthen lanes at your own pace and taking breaks in the shade. A local guide, monument fees and any other entrance tickets are included only when itemised in your quote. Continue over the High Atlas via Tizi n’Tichka, with suitable comfort stops on the winding road. The landscapes become busier as you descend towards Marrakech. Finish at your agreed hotel or nearby medina meeting point. Keep the evening flexible; this is a full journey rather than a short airport-transfer day.
Overnight: not included after the tour unless arranged separately in Marrakech.
Pace: a full road day, a ksar walk and mountain-pass sections.

Good to know
Your questions, answered
Which day is entirely in the desert area?
Day 2 stays around Merzouga, between two nights near Erg Chebbi. Local outings are optional and agreed in the quote; there is no transfer to another city that day.
Are both nights in a camp?
Not necessarily. You can discuss one camp night and one dune-edge lodge night, or a different agreed arrangement. The accommodation and bathroom facilities should be named before booking.
Is a camel ride compulsory?
No. Ask for a vehicle transfer when requesting your itinerary. Availability and the exact transfer arrangement should be confirmed before booking.
What accommodation can I choose?
Discuss simple, comfortable or premium rooms and the camp category. Your quote should name the accommodation, room type, bathroom facilities and included meals.
Are there long driving days?
Yes. The Sahara is a considerable distance from Marrakech and Fes. Routes include winding mountain roads and several hours in the vehicle; a four-day itinerary gives more flexibility than a three-day trip.
